Everex's Nanobook becomes the Cloudbook, gets gOS

While we haven't heard much more about the gOS laptop with the $300 price tag, word is that Everex will be equipping another portable model -- the 7-inch, VIA-based, ultra-portable Nanobook -- with a $400 MSRP and its Google-themed Linux OS. The device -- apparently being referred to as the "Cloudbook" -- is rumored to be launching at the CES in January, and will become available to the public the following week. Specs include a VIA C7 ULV 1.2GHz CPU, a 30GB hard drive, 512MB of RAM, WiFi, a card reader, two USB ports, and a DVI out. Nothing has been confirmed as of yet, but there seems to be ample information supporting the rumors. Just give us multiple colors, an SSD, and tell us where exactly the trackpad is and we could be in serious like.

"Cloudbook" UMPC to run Googlish Linux

Everex has confirmed plans to ship a UMPC (ultra-mobile PC) with a 7-inch screen, similar to competitor Asus's EEE PC. A source close to the company revealed that the device -- codenamed "Cloudbook" -- will ship with the Google Apps-oriented "gOS" Linux distribution
According to our anonymous source, the initial Cloudbook model will be powered by a Via C7 ULV processor clocked at 1.2GHz, and come with a 30GB hard drive. It will ship in mid-January in two models, one of which will have a 1.2MP webcam. In general, the hardware appears to closely resemble Via's Nanobook design.

Asus Eee PC Isn't the Only Cheap Seven-Inch Laptop

One of the hottest gifts this holiday season is the Asus Eee PC. They can't even keep the shelves stocked with the little seven-inch wonder. If you're anxious to do some mobile computing, you may want to consider the upcoming Everex Cloudbook, a Linux-powered UMPC that appears to be very similar to the Asus Eee PC.

As you may recall, Everex is the same company behind the gPC, a budget desktop computer that has been bandying around at Wal-Mart stores. Like its desktop counterpart, the Everex Cloudbook is also powered by Linux. Other criticals include a 7-inch screen, 1.3 megapixel camera, wired and wireless Ethernet, 4-in-1 card reader, USB 2.0, DVI-out, and 512MB RAM.

Comparing it to the Eee PC reveals several differences. Instead of a solid state drive and a 900MHz Intel Celeron processor, the Cloudbook gets a 30GB hard drive and a 1.2GHz Via C7 ULV processor. The price is expected to be about the same -- $400 -- when the Everex Cloudbook ships around January 15th. A developers version with touchscreen UI, Skype, and alarm clock module may "arrive as early as January 1st."
